Lately, gut health has been trending for a good reason. About 70% of our immune system is in our gut, making it a key foundation to health and wellness. It is encouraging to see so many people trying their best to prioritize health, especially in ways that promote gut health. Your gut is a crucial foundation of your health, which makes caring for it the perfect place to start your healing or prevention journey, whatever that may be. Unfortunately, we live in a culture that seeks a quick fix for everything. From detox to cleanses and everything in-between, the truth is, good health takes consistency and intention. Healing takes time, and much of it starts with the gut. Believe me, there is not a shortage of people out there, especially at the beginning of the year and in a pandemic, who will attempt to sell you a quick fix.’ It is no surprise that the probiotic industry is a $40 billion (yes with a B) industry. Do a quick search and you’ll see that people are spending $25-$90 bucks on these babies for a month’s supply. Here is what the industry is not telling you. Your gut needs diversity to thrive and flourish, so if you are taking the same probiotic for months on end, you are merely wasting money. While I am not against supplements in ways that can be beneficial, greed, in this case, drives me crazy. These products that are pushed at you are called supplements for a reason. They are meant to support an already healthy lifestyle, to give you that extra boost. They can't support what isn't there. Probiotic supplements are not the answer. I know marketing tactics make it look like a simple way to repopulate your gut flora, with labels touting “Up to 60 billion CFU!” etc. Honestly, that’s not what you need. You can have between 75-125 trillion bacteria in your gut. That 60 billion is not much for the money you invest in those capsules, and you won’t see much true benefit. Restoring health has to be done nutritionally, not pharmacologically. The cells in our body are made to be nourished and supported by what you eat and drink. Think about it. Are any of your cells made of drugs or medications? I am here to help you eat as if your life depends on it because it genuinely does. Certainly, supplement when needed to support your already healthy way of living! However, you can’t eat junk all day and assume that supplements will balance the ill effects of those unhealthy choices. Be mindful of sugar intake, overly processed foods, and antibiotics. Sugar and refined sweeteners feed the harmful bacteria in your gut. Antibiotics kill the bad bacteria that make you sick but also attack and kill the good bacteria that keep your gut flora healthy and support your wellness. Here is some good news. Commercial supplements are made to mimic real foods! Let’s talk about how you can redirect that money toward investing in foods that will not only nourish your gut flora but also fill your belly with lots more, including enjoyment of some delicious, wholesome meals!
There are no shortcuts to wellness. As nice as it may sound, it just is not as simple as taking probiotics daily, and you need to be intentional about feeding our gut bacteria what it needs to flourish fully!
